How can we talk about the future or history of the electric car without being reminded of the recent events? There have been dozens of discussions about cars here in the past, mostly concerned with which are the most beautiful. Little attention has been paid to the problems they have created, or what solutions might benefit the future of humanity.

Pardon me while I pompously post, perched atop an elitist soap box. I have a vague memory of days when our country was considered the gold standard in terms of its citizens having access to innovative technology. Or am I dreaming? “Socialist� Norway can afford and deliver this, while we settle for rusty, dusty crumbs from the Eisenhower era. It’s odd that our politicians repeatedly remind us we are the richest nation on earth.

I’m sure that some Norwegians buy these as status symbols or because it’s simply a trend, but maybe other rational citizens actually believe that it will benefit not just Norwegians, but all of us.

This vehicle never went into production, but was instead used to toodle around the Salvesen family estate in Scotland. The cart not only required a steersman in the front, but also a boilerman-stoker in the back to operate the rear-mounted coil-fired boiler.

Electric cars have had an interesting history.As EVs run on electricity, they have no exhaust and do not contain parts like the fuel.

Peripherally related is an electric hybrid from a few years later (1900). Ferdinand Porsche developed his "Mixt" runabout for the Lohner company in Vienna, and raced it himself at hillclimbs. A gas engine drove an electrical generator, which in turn drove electric motors at the wheel hubs. You could say he was about a hundred years ahead of his time. In 1955, Porsches were featured at the Park Avenue showroom of Max Hoffman, designed by another man who was way ahead of his time.
