Re: Video: Taliesin - Spring Green, WI
Somewhat of a shame not seeing the Hillside drafting room in use; as if the heart of the estate has been removed. I suppose they'll eventually find a possible (but perhaps questionable) purpose for it... and it may already be available for "events".

Re: A winter day at Taliesin - photos
Nice; Taliesin wears winter well. Actually, my first visit was as an out of town trespasser during a blizzard 48 years ago. The Dana statue was in the garden court of Taliesin at the beginning, although for quite some time located under cover at an exterior stairwell. Anyone know if it's a replica? ...

Re: Video: Gordon House - Silverton, OR
I saw the house not long after it was moved. Funny how effective the simplicity of Wright's touch can often be, such as the clear pane of glass adjacent to the upstairs bedroom door, allowing the perfed fenestration to seamlessly continue on; but not so at the opposite end of the hall... this singul...

Re: Book: "Insufficient Funds: The Financial Life of Frank Lloyd Wright"
If I'm remembering correctly, Wright also borrowed from his long-time patron Darwin Martin an amount exceeding $20,000 dollars to construct Taliesin 1 and settle some of his debts in Europe. Which would be something around $250k today. Martin never truly saw a repayment for this loan. That's correc...

Roderick, that would be Jaroslav Polivka (a Czech). He also worked on the Johnson Tower, the Guggenheim, and the S.F Bay crossing. The first Point Park scheme was a concrete and steel civic center 1,000 feet in diameter and 175 feet tall. Capable of holding 1/3 of the city's population it also conta...

The Coonley plaque was installed at the prow of the terrace; a points of the compass abstraction with the initials "F" & "C" (Ferry Coonley).

The Learn/Preservation thread of that link contains the complete 500+ page Preservation Master Plan for Taliesin West prepared by Harboe Architects-an unbelievable amount of history, photos, plans, and documentation to salivate over. Of interest was the justification, if obvious, for the decision no...

This is a great topic with some decent, albeit sparse, accounting and should be worth the risk buying... Schrenk is an Associate Professor of Architectural History at U of Virginia, with quite a varied output. The book resulted from a We the People grant awarded to her by The National Endowment for ...

Re: Wright Post-Italy; Goethe Street and Taliesin I
Wright broke one of his own "rules" in order to define the masterpiece Taliesin 1 became. The house and studio certainly were influenced by the Italian countryside to a degree, but there are precedents before both Fiesole and Taliesin (such as the wood and plaster project of 1904-"The Drawings of Fr...

Re: Alden Dow house for sale
Can't recall where published, but as a pre-teen seeing Dow's own house "submerged" into it's pond was an architectural epiphany; and of course, Wright a revelation not long after!

Re: Obituary: Franklin Toker
I read it Stephen, a long time ago but recall it quite informative, well researched and with quite a few notes to the text. I suppose there will be criticism true of just about any book on Wright. The back of the jacket has the photo of Wright and EJ standing alongside one another at TWest in the 50...
