Re: Article: FLW & the world's oldest running electric car
Peripherally related is an electric hybrid from a few years later (1900). Ferdinand Porsche developed his "Mixt" runabout for the Lohner company in Vienna, and raced it himself at hillclimbs. A gas engine drove an electrical generator, which in turn drove electric motors at the wheel hubs. You could...

Light variation
I wanted to build a theater light like the one at Taliesin Spring Green. Mrs. Wright gave the plans to Don Lovness many years ago and he built one that was by the studio front door. The dimensions, however, are fussy and complicated, so I adapted those plans to modern materials (who makes Philippine...

Re: Concrete pigment formula
From "Growing Up Wright", Virginia and Don Lovness remembered laying the concrete floor of the "studio" in 1957: Virginia: "The worst thing of all though was pouring the cement floor. We didn’t know how to lay cement that would be slick. So we found an old German cement finisher who had retired, and...

Re: Pearl Palace to undergo urgent restoration
Lonnie's book "Growing Up Wright" has some interesting information about the Pearl Palace. Wes Peters was in Iran for extended periods of time during construction and wrote to Don Lovness regularly. One telegram to Don was an appeal to raise a considerable amount of money on short notice (unrelated ...

Re: Book, "Growing Up Wright" is due in three weeks
This has been an interesting journey. This summer we hired an established book printer to do the job, one of the few left that does sewn binding (as opposed to glued). Our timing was awful, as our project hit the incoming wave of books being printed in order to meet Christmas sales deadlines. As a s...

Re: Book, "Growing Up Wright" is due in three weeks
The video narration may be a little misleading; they traveled around looking at Prairie school-style buildings and Wright homes. I would love to know what building that is/was. I asked a lot of people while the book was in progress, but no definitive answers.

Re: Book, "Growing Up Wright" is due in three weeks
The two women in the photo are Virginia and Lonnie Lovness, circa 1990s. The scale may look different because the photo was taken from a low vantage point; the Peterson cottage is on mostly flat ground and the Lovness cottage is above a slope to the south and southwest. I probably also was using a s...

Book, "Growing Up Wright" is due in three weeks
Lonnie Lovness' new book "Growing Up Wright, building a dream by hand with the world's greatest architect", is in production at Bang Printing in Brainerd, Minnesota. Bang has a long history as a premier book printer, and we have made a commitment: "produced, printed and bound in the USA." The 288-pa...

Re: Book: Car is Architecture - FLW's cars & motorcycle
Wow, this thread has gone pretty far afield from the original post. It's nice to know, however, that there are some car guys among us. Having written about cars for thirty years I appreciate the enthusiasm. This photo doesn't shed any more light on a list of Wright's cars, but it's interesting to kn...

Re: Has Anyone Published an Architecture Book?
I would suggest you don't use a generic "publish it yourself" company. Those books are generally ugly, hard to read, with low-quality images, poor choice of paper stock and a "crank-it-out" attitude. Works fine for memoirs that are all text but not for anything more involved. An architecture book sh...
